VFR Traffic Analysis for the Proposed Horseshoe Shoal Wind Farm

Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
MITRE Corporation
Data analysis concludes that for a nine month period (January to September, 2011), there were 427 aircraft operating visual flight rule (VFR) at altitudes of 949 feet and below in the proposed Cape Wind farm area. An additional 356 aircraft operated VFR from 950-1,049 feet. For a wind turbine height of 440 feet, aircraft would have to fly at 940 feet to maintain a 500 foot clearance; therefore, aircraft reported operating VFR at 1,000 would not be affected by the proposed wind turbines.
